Known for her unusual, highly individual dancing style, Jane Avril became a defining figure of Montmartre entertainment. Lautrec’s 1899 lithograph celebrates her theatrical character with flattened colour, exaggerated contours and a rhythmic composition that seems to continue beyond the page.
