The musical extravaganza was based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Although much of the original music is no longer recognised, it was still played and discussed by MGM upon the film remake released later in 1939. The show ran for 293 performances in Broadway, followed by a traveling tour.
