Isaac Merritt Singer came from humble beginnings. Working in a machine-shop in Boston in 1851, he was given a sewing machine to repair. He constructed a better sewing machine 11 days later, which he patented and launched I.M.Singer & Company. By 1860, it was the world’s biggest producer of sewing machines.
