For a period, the area was settled by the Anglo-Saxons in the 7th century, becoming the heart of Lundenwic. By 1200, part of the area had been walled off by Westminster Abbey, and became “the garden of the Abbey and Convent” - and so today the name of the area being called “Covent Garden”.
