Illustration by Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt, featuring ‘hedgehog’ in various languages. The word 'hedgehog' was first used in 1450 and is derived from the Middle English word ‘heyghoge.’ Alternate names for the spiky animal include ‘urchin,’ ‘furze-pig,’ and ‘hedgepig.’
