After being in hospital having cut his own left ear, Van Gogh was discharged on 7 January 1889, and wrote that day to his brother Theo of his plans to start working on two still lifes the following day, to ‘get used to painting again’ and this is one of the still life paintings consisting of bursts of contrasting colours.
