The word “nice,” when it appeared in English in the 13th century, actually meant “stupid” (derived from the Latin “nescius” meaning “ignorant”). From then over time, its meaning progressed in stages from “timid,” “fussy,” to “delicate,” “precise,” “agreeable,” and finally reaching the meaning of “kind.”
