Malaysia's capital and largest city measures 243km2. The origin of the city dates back to 1857, when 87 Chinese tin miners founded a settlement (at what is now the suburb of Ampang). Kuala Lumpur superseded Klang as the state capital in 1880, then was later named the capital of the independent Federation of Malaya in 1957, and of Malaysia in 1963.
