The pyramidal orchid (Orchis pyramidalis), native to southwestern Eurasia, has been admired in Britain since at least the seventeenth century. It thrives in meadows, grasslands, and chalky soils, and became celebrated in the Victorian language of flowers as a symbol of beauty, fertility, and lasting affection.
