Every January, the Ōzumō Hatsu-basho marks sumo’s first grand tournament of the year. Before it begins, the sacred Dohyō Matsuri purification ceremony is held, where offerings—salt, kelp, and rice—are buried beneath the ring to pray for safety and fair bouts.
